The map in History is broken up into many different territories in which dwell certain peoples who are ruled by a certain type of ruler, whether it be a King, Chief or Queen. One can obtain a territory by conquering it, once conquered it becomes one of your provinces. Territories are designed the way they are based on historical geography and the territories population.

Religion
In Out of Eden (which takes place between 4000 and 2000 BC) most territories have a pagan religion, which as far as the game's concerned is any religion that is not a major religion such as Hinduism, Judaism or Zoroastrianism. In out of Eden there are 24 religions all of which are pagan with the exception of Hinduism and "Early Monotheism." Early monotheism only comes into the game should the player select it as their state religion. Religion impacts how much other territories like your provinc(es); it goes up by 5 for the same religion.
